Jose Ka Joma Maria Sison (born 1939) is still in exile in The Netherlands. He was born in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur that incidentally was also the place where the Salvadors, that later became Samsons, in F. Sionil Joses Dusk (5 stars) came from.

Was it coincidence? Was Ka Joma the prototype of Pepe Samson? This is an interesting question that I will ask FSJ when I see him again.Ka Joma is still in exile in The Netherlands because in 2002, the year following 9/11, the US classified Sison as a person supporting terrorism.

In 1986, he and the many political prisoners were released by President Corazon Aquino but the military opposed it so he had no choice but to agree on self-exile in The Netherlands. He is now 74 years old but still cannot go home and join his fellow Filipinos because the military is afraid of him. He is said to be the founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines with heavy Maoism ideologies. He was a graduate of English at the University of the Philippines - Diliman in 1959, taught literature course in the same university before he founded Kilusang Makabayan (KM) or Patriotic Youth with Nilo Tayag.

During the time when Ferdinand Marcos was the president i.e.,, 1965-1986, Ka Joma was in jail for nine years. His experience in jail is vividly described in this bilingual book: Sa Loob at Labas ng Piitan (Prison and Beyond). Released in 1986, this poetry book won the Southeast Asia WRITE Award for the Philippines from the Crown Prince of Thailand in Bangkok.[image error]
